General Rules

  1. I like to put more emphasis on ROLE-playing, as opposed to Roll-playing. This means that I try to keep the dice-rolling to a minimum, and spend more time on character interaction than combat. This also means that I expect your character to have a believable, consistent background, goals, and personality, and not just be a collection of stats on a sheet. I expect you to be able to role-play out picking up that attractive young satyr and nymphish pooka across the room, rather than just counting up the successes on your Charisma + Subterfuge roll. In other words, if you're dependent on die rolls for everything, this is not the game for you.
  2. The Storyteller (or "ST"---that's me) is the final authority on everything in the game (including your PC's romantic entanglements, the general paradigm the chronicle takes place in, and what is and not appropriate in that paradigm. For all intents and purposes, I control the phase of the moon, the color of the sky...etc., etc., etc. :-).
  3. There is nothing worse than a player in a group format who wants to go it alone. Hanging at home or waiting for every action and revelation to be brought to you on a silver platter WILL NOT HAPPEN. I'm a storyteller, not a maid, and if you chose not to take part the story will go on without you. You are therefore required to back up other members of your Motley/House, even if the distaste is almost more than you can bear. It also means that if there is action, your character better be in the midst of it with his brethren rather than sitting on his duff watching Days Of Our Lives. If he isn't there, there better be one hell of a good reason. If you consistently refuse to participate, don't be surprised if you start getting ignored.
  4. I reserve the right to make you leave the scene, game session, or Chronicle at any time and for any reason.
  5. In-game, please understand that the attitudes of my NPCs don't necessarily mirror my own. Sometimes, I can get carried away; when this happens, please don't take it personally. Also, be sure to let me know if you're speaking out of character. Unless you tell me, I'll assume you aren't.
  6. Just because something is in the rule books doesn't mean that it applies. Also, keep in mind that I may do things differently from what's stated in the rules, and that anything found in a rulebook or supplement that I haven't read will be considered non-existent for purposes of my games. This is MY world. I can change things, and I will. In fact, let's be blunt here: Eventually, this campaign will leave the World of Darkness as we know it, and embark on something far more terrifying. As such, while the rules will remain nominally the same, your characters will learn [at the same time as you, the player] what the changes are, and how reality functions in places other than Kansas.
  7. You should be able to make the distinction between what you know and what you know your character knows. This is important for a TON of reasons. Think about it. They'll come.
  8. If you do something impossibly stupid, like tell a Redcap, "Bite me!," you WILL suffer the consequences. This world can be a very dangerous place, and you aren't invulnerable to those dangers just because you're a Player Character.
  9. Respect your fellow players. If another player has my attention, don't interrupt until we are through.
  10. If you're stumped, take me aside and tell me; there's always the possibility your character could have a flash of "Divine Inspiration" or a "Vision from the Dreaming." I have a tendency to view the worlds we play in as entities within themselves, and thus we have nice loopholes for these very purposes. DO NOT OVERUSE THIS LENIENCE. IT WILL VANISH. And if you're really unhappy with the game, please come and talk to me. Player feedback is CRUCIAL to a successful campaign. This chronicle, composed of several campaigns, is subject to all sorts of modifications. I'm more than willing to discuss and modify to make all of us happy. You have to keep me informed, though, or I may not recognize your displeasure. After all, I like to think I'm doing a good job.

Mythogenesis

  1. My method of character creation is pretty straightforward. First, and most important, I want you to come up with a Concept for a well thought-out, fun character. Then, build the character according to the standard character creation rules given in the appropriate rulebook. You may take Merits and Flaws if you wish, but note White Wolf's ruling, you may only have a maximum of 7 additional Freebie Points from Flaws.
  2. I'd like your character to have a believable, consistent background, goals and personality. I expect you to be able to justify everything on your sheet in some way. I also don't want to see lack of abilities that would fit your Character Concept. In other words, if your character is a lawyer, s/he ought to have the appropriate rating in Law (FYI, it's a 3). If I don't think your character's stats fit in with his/her Concept, I may ask you to change either the Concept or the character sheet. It just makes SENSE, JIM!
  3. I would like you to come up with some kind of background for your PC. Ideally, this should be written, but I'll also accept one given to me orally during character creation. This will deal with how your character got to where s/he is today, and give you a chance to get your feet wet and become comfortable with the character before things pick up some time later in our first group session. The amount of detail you provide me is up to you, but I'd at least like some idea of what your character's appearance and personality are like, as well as enough personal history that I know where s/he is coming from. In order to encourage you to come up with a background, I will award you a number of extra Freebie points for the care and effort you put into making up your character, as follows:
    Information Number of Points
    Coherent Character Concept 1
    Oral background 2 to 3
    (depending on detail)
    Written background 3 to 5
    (depending on detail)

Please note that the above is subject to ST approval (i.e., you don't get the points if I don't think you deserve them), and that I expect the Concept and background to match (or at least explain to my satisfaction) the point distribution on your sheet.
